Dr. Laurie in the Supermarket

As a new City Harvest volunteer, I dedicate some of my time to helping out the community. It is so rewarding to be able to teach others how to take better care of themselves, and what better place to start than in the supermarket — our real PHARMACY! Food is our best medicine. You can get started making healthier choices in your own diet by purchasing fresh, whole foods from the outer perimeter of the grocery store and doing your best to avoid non genetically modified foods (non-GMO) whenever possible.

Feeding our Communities: AVOCADO!

Today at the C-Town Grocery store, we were on a mission to teach people about the beautifully creamy, tasty and healthy: avocado. Naturally filled with fiber, B vitamins and monounsaturated fat, the avocado helps boost your healthy cholesterol levels and can be the ideal replacement for bacon or other creamy dressings including mayonnaise. We made the ALT-sandwich, using whole wheat bread (yuo can opt to make this an open-faced sandwich to lower your carb/sugar intake, or use a GF bread/wrap that is equally as tasty) onto which we spread freshly mashed avocado, tomato slices, cucumbers and spinach. Use any veggies you have in the fridge to create more variety and new tastes.

Sharing knowledge and empowering healthier eating in the Grocery Store

Avocados are packed with all the goodies you need for a healthy diet — smear it onto your sandwich, slice it into your salad, squirt with lemon and mash into a beautiful dip for veggies, add to a smoothie for a rich-texture that tastes better than any ice cream. I am sure you can think of millions of other ways to enjoy this fruit!

      Thanks so much.. It was quite a successful demo since we converted quite a large number of people who ‘thought’ they didn’t like avocado until they tasted it! The location was in the Bronx. Hope to do this again soon 😉
